Description

Do you want to build a career that is truly worthwhile? The International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, is the largest global development institution focused on the private sector in emerging markets. Working with more than 2,000 businesses worldwide, we use our capital, expertise, and influence to create markets and opportunities where they are needed most. Visit www.ifc.org.

IFC’s Partnerships, Communications and Outreach (CPO) Vice Presidency manages multilateral engagement and communications – both internal and external – across IFC. The Vice Presidency is responsible for content creation, branding, reputational risk management, relationships with shareholders in Western Europe and Japan, fundraising, and multilateral engagement.

The Risk and Public Affairs unit provides reputational risk and issues management support, coordinates global engagement with critical stakeholders including civil society, manages communications around the institution’s environmental, social and governance work and transparency and access to information programs, and provides institutional policy-related communications advice to Senior Management.

Roles and Responsibilities

The Communications Officer will work across the Vice Presidency in support of the stakeholder advocacy and risk communications functions of the Risk and Public Affairs Unit - with a focus on Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC).  This will involve developing and managing relationships with civil society organizations across LAC and serving as an effective interlocutor between IFC and those organizations, as well as helping to train senior operational staff in how to engage with civil society. This will include support to a corporate-wide initiative on improving accountability and more proactive problem solving with communities impacted by IFC-supported projects, in coordination with IFC’s new Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) management approach and Regional ESG Management. The successful candidate will have an understanding of the civil society landscape in several countries in LAC, including development-focused NGOs and CSOs, and an appreciation of the role of the private sector in development and promoting economic prosperity.

The communications officer will also work with other members of the unit to help identify reputational and stakeholder risks and develop communications strategies aimed at mitigating those risks. This may include reviewing key project documents, participating in project meetings, researching issues raised by critics, and providing communication support to teams to identify reputational risks and enhance stakeholder engagement efforts. The Communications Officer may support “in-the-moment” crisis communications, as well as helping to develop and execute strategies to manage risk upstream in the project cycle. The Communications Officer will also support the Corporate processes to identify and track reputational risks and communicate them to Senior Management.

The role will involve working with staff from across the Corporation – including communications staff, investment and advisory officers, compliance and risk staff, and environmental and social specialists. Although reporting to the Risk and Public Affairs unit in Washington DC, the Communications Officer will be an integrated member of the regional communications team, with a secondary reporting line into the regional communications lead.
