Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) criteria are emerging as mainstream metrics for asset managers and owners. Issues such as climate change, water scarcity, gender lens, supply chains, product stewardship and economic inequality are top of the mind for the global investing community.
India’s market regulator, SEBI, vide circular dated December 24, 2019, has mandated (w.e.f. July 01, 2020) that all Mutual Funds and Alternative Investment Funds follow the Stewardship Code in relation to their investments. In order to discharge their stewardship responsibilities, the institutional investors will be required to monitor and actively engage with investee companies on strategy, performance, capital structure, material ESG opportunities or risks etc.
