Purpose:
Access to clean cooking energy in India has gathered a new momentum in the political discourse of India after the launch of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), a scheme that aims to improve access to LPG for the socio-economically weaker sections of society. While the scheme has been successful in providing LPG connections to over 80 million households and thereby improving the penetration of LPG connections to about 94 per cent in the country; the real challenge is still to sustain the use of clean cooking energy and transition households away from the traditional use of biomass. According to the largest multidimensional energy access survey (ACCESS) conducted by CEEW in 2018 in six of the most energy access-deprived states, only about one-third of rural population use LPG as their primary cooking fuel. Further, 81 per cent of the rural households in these six states continue to use biomass for cooking. Burning biomass for cooking results in Household Air Pollution (HAP), which causes at least 800,000 premature deaths across the country every year. Women and children are disproportionately affected as they are exposed to high levels of HAP, and the tedious task of gathering fuelwood is often left to them. This calls for a need for cooking energy narrative to evolve and also include the provision of affordable, accessible, safe and convenient use of clean cooking energy in a sustained manner.
The Council is undertaking a nationally representative survey (Indian-Residential Energy Survey) of 14,592 urban and rural households spread across 21 states in India. This survey has a dedicated focus on understanding the cooking energy access situation and its transition in India, especially after PMUY. This study will also try to understand the current uptake levels of electric cooking among the Indian households and their readiness to transition to electric cooking. The insights developed from this analysis could help shape the upcoming schemes and policies related to cooking energy in India.
Job Summary
CEEW is seeking young, bright, and passionate candidates with some experience in handling large data sets, for the position of ‘Research Intern – Understanding the state of cooking energy access in India.’ You will be expected to support the organisation in analysing the data, obtained from IRES survey. CEEW researchers will provide the necessary training required to meet the objectives. An ideal candidate for the position should be able to handle large data sets obtained from primary surveys, and analyse information using a variety of mathematical tools and interdisciplinary methodologies. The candidate should have working knowledge of some statistical software like STATA or R.
Responsibilities and Duties
- To work with the large data sets in STATA or R
- To track relevant government policies and programmes and ongoing developments in the sector on a periodic basis.
- To summarise the findings as reports and presentations.
- To participate in relevant conferences, workshops, training programmes for comprehensive understanding of the clean cooking energy sector.

- Must have strong data analysis, research and academic writing skills.
- Ability and willingness to dig deeper into details, while also keeping a sense of the broader objectives and big picture.
